日籍投手上原浩治提早參加紅襪的春訓營，去年季末續簽2年1800萬美元，他說：「當時我很肯定，如果簽約的話一定是紅襪，從頭到尾也只跟他們談過。」

上原浩治2013年季中接任終結者，成為紅襪該年拿到世界大賽冠軍的重要人物，但他去年表現有些掙扎，自責分率從1.09上漲到2.52。

縱使表現有所退步，上原浩治仍然獲得紅襪2年1800萬美元合約續留，今年4月就要滿40歲的老將，提早4天加入紅襪的春訓營。

2014年投得跌跌撞撞，上原浩治說：「當時身體有些狀況，那個時候我並不想談論此問題，我認為我已經撐過來了。」

談到再留紅襪2年，其實他心裡面早有決定，「當紅襪開出複數年合約，沒有任何理由去進入自由市場。當時我很肯定，如果簽約的話一定是紅襪，從頭到尾也只跟他們談過。」
