「老爹」David Ortiz只打完前6局就突然離開比賽，總教練John Farrell證實是家庭因素，紅襪終場仍以8比4擊敗皇家，成功扮演季後賽攪局者。

Ortiz完成前3個打席之後，第7局再次輪到他的棒次，紅襪換上Christian Vazquez接替。

紅襪總教練Farrell說：「家裡發生緊急事件，Ortiz被迫要離開比賽，他馬上就會去搭飛機，接下來應該會在匹茲堡跟球隊會合(作客海盜系列賽)。

此戰紅襪Daniel Nava在第6局敲出逆轉滿貫砲，第7局Ortiz的離開沒有造成直接影響，終場以8比4贏球、系列賽3勝1敗。

皇家輸球後美聯外卡落後1.5場勝差，一壘手Eric Hosmer表示，「球季已經進入尾聲，你絕對不會想要4連戰輸掉3場。我們球隊什麼場面都經歷過，大家一定可以有反彈表現。」
